Leadership Across Generations
An examination of how mentorship, dialogue and institutional memory can strengthen emerging leadership.
Executive Summary
An examination of how mentorship, dialogue and institutional memory can strengthen emerging leadership.
Mentorship as Institutional Exchange
Youth 18 mentorship connects Fellows with experienced leaders and specialists who can explain how judgement is exercised within institutions, professions and complex operating environments.
The value of mentorship lies in perspective, informed challenge and the transmission of institutional memory. It complements formal learning and strengthens independent decision-making.
Independent Judgement
Fellow selection, project review and published positions remain within their respective accountable processes. Clear boundaries protect the integrity of both the mentoring relationship and the wider Youth 18 programme.
Fellows remain responsible for testing advice, considering evidence and forming their own conclusions.
Reciprocity and Continuity
Intergenerational exchange is reciprocal. Experienced leaders contribute context and perspective; Fellows bring current knowledge, emerging practice and questions shaped by changing professional environments.
This exchange strengthens continuity between generations while preserving the independence required for responsible leadership.
